Welcome to Herts Canoe Club, where buddies get wet all year round.

HCC Committee Members 2009

Darren Fergus - Chairman

My job as chairman of Herts Canoe Club is to help co-ordinate all of our great work, from paddling activities to coaching, from publicity to the environment, from the club house to the local community; in fact across almost everything we do. Most often this happens at our monthly committee meetings, although there is a fair bit that goes on behind the scenes. It’s a great job in the club and if I could change one thing, it would be to have more free time to get wet on the river Lea and paddle with my friends at the club. I would really like to be paddling more on a Sunday morning.

White water! What I enjoy most of all is white water kayaking. In the UK or abroad I love nothing more than the feelings you get when you style a tough rapid; conquering your fears and raising your game in something that pushes you as a kayaker. White water paddling is something that I love doing! Going away on white water trips is great fun and if I could do it all of the time I would. But let’s get back to the reality of life in the south east of England which is great for summer sunshine, although less good if you enjoy paddling white water. If I can’t be on a nice run in Wales then the next best thing for me is Hurley Weir. We are lucky to have Hurley on our doorsteps and one of my goals for this year is to pull off some good (basic) playboating moves in my new playboat. So fingers crossed for a barmy summer and a few tricks under my belt!

Claire Newman - Publicity Officer

I have been Publicity Officer for the club for well over 5 years now, this is a fantastic role as I get to shout about all the wonderful things we are doing as a club.  I have been paddling since the age of 9 which was mainly flatwater until about 8 years ago when I starting white-water paddling which is my passion.  I have made so many friends in the club and love the social aspect to the sport.

Tina Fruhauf - Secretary

Tina is responsible for the organisation of the meetings of the General Committee and of the Club, the recording of minutes relating to the general business of the Club, items of general correspondence and other duties as may be deemed necessary from time to time by the General Committee.

Andy Morley - Treasurer

Andy is responsible for the collection of all monies and keeps such books of account as required by the General Committee. He produces at the AGM a balance sheet showing the financial state of the Club, and accompanied by the Auditor’s Report. In addition he ensures that a list of Annual Subscriptions is prominently displayed on the club notice board.

Alan Winter - Clubhouse Officer

Alan is responsible for the organisation of general maintenance of the clubhouse and its associated equipment and also for ensuring that members have access during all regular club activities.

Martin Ayliffe - Membership Secretary

Martin is responsible for administrative matters relating to the Club’s membership renewals.

Laurence Hallgarth - Coaching Officer

I have been coaching at the club for a number of years and the ongoing aim for coaching within the club is to progress all the members to a standard that they would like to achieve in whatever area of paddling that may be.

Also for the club coaches to progress up the coaching awards to keep up the consistent high standards and pass on their knowledge.

Louisa Neufeld - Environment Officer

Louisa drives the environmental policy. She identifies future projects/developments to bridge the gap between canoeing and the environment we paddle in. She informs, educates and inspires club members to notice the wildlife around them.

Ally Dunks - Welfare Officer

Ally acts as the liaison between youth members and the committee; encouraging younger paddlers to contribute ideas to the club. She is responsible for safeguarding and protecting youth and adult members. She promotes good practice and coordinates any action following concerns identified within the club.

Matt Taylor - Ordinary Member

Jon Starling - Ordinary Member

As the song goes, what you like most about me is my girlfriend, Chris Ellis, the farmous traffic cone litter picker extraordinaire! Other things about me, well Claire thinks I look like a criminal in my portrait photo, and it's true that if you leave your new kayak lying around outside I'll have it away on my toes with it, so watch out. Also, I don't do white water (to the distate of virtually everyone else in the club). What I do love doing though, is flat water trips, which hopefully with Wendy's help, I'll be organising a few of, while taking a few tips from the master, Neal. By extension, I'm the advocate for pursuits on anything chilled, watery and flat, talk to me if you want anything raised at the committee meetings that might further your enjoyment of the transparent stuff.
