Herts Canoe Club was formed in 1978.  It is located in Hertford, on Hartham Common by the River Lee.  We are affiliated to the British Canoe Union click here for further information on the BCU.

When and Where?

We meet twice a week, Sunday mornings and generally Wednesday evenings, although this is dependant in the time of year.

Club Meet Times

  • Sunday Mornings

- At the club house 9.45am till around 12.30pm.  See Activities page for further details.

  • Wednesday Evenings from 6pm to dusk

- At the Clubhouse during the summer months for general paddling.  This only avaliable for members who have 1* or above.  This is an evening of general paddling.  There will be no formal instruction on hand.  We also do arrange pool sessions at Turnford school pool.  See Activities page for further details.

The best place to park is at the public car park near Hertford swimming pool

  • Why Kayaking / Canoeing?

This is a great sport that allows you to develop both technical and personal skills. It can lead you to many exhilarating situations, or just simply allowing you to paddle stretches of water observing the country side from a closer range. It does allow you an important release from the working week. Throughout the summer months we run beginners sessions (see Beginners and Training for details)

  • Why Herts Canoe Club?

We are an expanding friendly club where membership interests vary between all forms of canoeing / kayaking. We have a good range of equipment available for hire at reasonable rates.  A training programme has been developed to allow individuals the opportunity to follow the BCU * awards programme.

There are opportunities to practice moving water skills at the local weirs. As a club we can run specific courses upon request – contact us for further details.

As a club we organise numerous day or weekend trips away to suit all levels. These include white water, placid water and sea kayaking trips.

We do organise a race each year - the Great Ouse Race in Bedford, perhaps you fancy learning to paddle a racing kayak?

  • What about the Equipment?

We have a good selection of boats and equipment that can be hired at reasonable rates. If you have your own kayak then we do offer a storage facility. See membership page for details.

  • What to do next?

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced paddler and you have any further questions then please feel free to contact us.
